Here’s a rich, savory Syrah, made Northern Rhône-style. Dense and full-bodied, it displays complex flavors of blackberries, dark unsweetened chocolate, plums, tobacco, leather and black pepper. The tannins are robust, but very finely ground.

Drinks a bit jammy-simple and direct now, with ripe, spicy flavors of blackberries, cherries, raspberries, blueberries, cola, pepper and lots of sweetly smoky oak. The acidity is crisp and clean, suggesting some time in the cellar. Should mesh together and blossom by mid-2010.

This barrel selection of wines shows how well Sauvignon Blanc does in Happy Canyon. The variety was already a star in Santa Ynez Valley, but growing it in a warmer region adds ripeness and richness. It’s lush in citrus and honeysuckle, with crisp acidity and oak barrel influences.

A first-class Pinot from this great vineyard, in the heart of the southern Santa Rita Hills. The wine is dry and silky and super-complex, offering waves of raspberry tart, cherry pie, cola, sweet oak and dusty Asian spice flavors. For all the richness, it’s dry and crisp in acidity. Now–2014.

Delicious and exotic, with raspberry, cherry, Mandarin orange, date, cinnamon spice and sweet oak flavors that are deep and long on the finish. Amazing that the alcohol is so low for the ripeness. Could be brisker in acidity, as it feels somewhat melted, which limits ageability, but it’s a beauty now with lamb chops.

You might want to lay this Syrah-based Rhône wine down for a year or two. Tasted in the early fall of 2010, it’s sharp and fresh-fruity, which gives the cherry, raspberry and cocoa a jammy taste. The grapes come from Paso Robles and Santa Barbara County.

Nice structure of crisp acidity and smoky oak on this ripe, clean Sauvignon Blanc. It has rich flavors of pineapples, apples, pears and honeysuckle. Could be drier, but will appeal to fruit-forward fans.
