Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet nose, very DRC with green herbs and the noticeable aromas of stems, also ripe black cherry juice and lots of presence in the aromas that rise out of the glass; sweet and soft in the mouth with a wonderful silky texture and great balance; interesting mix of sophisticated flavors develop in the mouth with hits of pitch and green pepper flavors that blend with hints of citrus peel and floral essences; perhaps a bit thinner now at the finish than it was some years ago, it seems to be losing some of its edge at the end; still a wonderful and sophisticated wine and close to perfection. The nose on this wine shows lots of age and a considerable amount of oxidation, leathery and musty, but with an undercurrent of sweet ripe fruit that is still quite evident; the wine is better in the mouth than the nose suggests, showing quite a bit of sweet, ripe fruit, touch of licorice and spices; there is an “old wine” taste to the wine and I suspect that this bottle is more advanced than others might be; still has a nice finish with fruit and acidity present if a bit faded. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Full nose, very sweet with aromas of stewed fruit, roasted nuts, smoke and earth, the nose is big but monolithic; very sweet in the mouth with an almost sugary texture that is more than jammy; this balances out with more time in the glass, and the wine becomes more balanced and elegant; solid finish; this is a workhorse of a La Tâche, solid and reliable but not great. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Much like its lesser sister of Echezeaux described above, this wine starts out right away with a wonderful nose of sweet and ripe fruit, perhaps more opulent and with a kind of buttery scent to the nose, the aromas are more complex and deeper than in the Echezeaux, and exhibit more gamey qualities; in the mouth, the wine has the same soft and rich texture that its sibling has, but there is a detectable element of depth that is different; the flavors emerge from the depths of the glass to exhibit spices and black cherry cider flavors mixing with wood and earth that conjures up elemental visions; the finish is long and focused with a nice flush of lemon acidity to freshen the palate as the wine becomes a memory. Fabulous nose, exuberant and electric with opulent fruit aromas, tobacco, cedar, green spices; clean and fresh in the mouth with both power and elegance; deep and complex with sweet fruit balanced with the subtle presence of soft acids and focused tannins; gamey in the mouth with a hint of smoked meat and nuts; exotic finish with great length and breadth; this is the top of the food chain in Burgundy. (20+/20)

Stemmy, woody and earthen nose with layers of sweet, ripe rich black fruits, pepper and coal; sweet fruit flavors in a perfumed stew that has elements of pepper and peat mixed in; long finish, well balanced with very sweet, woody flavors at the finish; this is superb. (18.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and ripe fruit on the nose with black cherry and wood smoke aromas, gamey earthen with a touch of brush and wildness to the nose; this is an interesting wine that has more game and smoked meat flavors than I expect from this wine; but at the same time sweet and ripe, rich flavors; fresh and well-made; silky textured and smooth at the finish; quite impressive for its age. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Opening with classic La Tache aromas of chocolate and earth with a mixture of smoked meat and sweet, dense fruit, damp earth backed by floral scents that add some lightness; sweet and rich in the mouth, the wine is quite thick at the outset with the usual La Tache chewiness; then it blossoms with more subtlety in the flavors as light acids insert themselves into the tapestry of flavors; more lemon zest and fresh fruit in the mid-mouth; succulent and rich at the end with great length; this wine is great on its own, but suffered the fate of being served alongside the ’85 Romanee Conti, so it lost some of its luster in the comparisons, but through no fault of its own. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and rich nose with deep, rich black cherry aromas, layered and enticing if not particularly complex; first taste is tantalizingly sweet and rich, but the wine fails to sustain that early promise, turning somewhat green and grassy, wooden and dry; lacks enough real fruit to sustain the structure; a bit stemmy and with big chewy tannins at the end; not a favorite. (13/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
First nose is strange and not what I expected, herbal and green, closed and tight, there is a lot of sweet fruit in the back of the nose, however, that seems to be waiting to get out; sweet and ripe in the mouth, loaded with ripe fruit, black cherry flavors; exotic and powerful in the mouth with wonderful flavors of black fruits mixed with a little tar; still quite closed and not revealing all that it has. (19/20)
