Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Musqué clone is famous for giving drily grassy, gooseberry aromas and flavors to Sauvignon Blanc, but this bottling doesn’t really show them. Instead, it’s soft and sugary sweet in pineapple, peach and apricot jam flavors.

A bit rustic and heavy, with extracted jammy fruit but lacking a certain vivacity and sharpness in the mouth. Good enough for the price. Production was 12,500 cases.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The tannins are quite hard and dry, giving an astringency to this young Cab, but it’s so rich in fruit, so long in the finish, that it will make a great partner with certain rich foods, especially lamb and grilled steak. There’s a deep core of ripe blackberries, currants, dark unsweetened chocolate and pepper deep down inside this complex wine. Should develop through 2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tastes a bit rough and ready, with a Porty edge, although the wine is dry and the official numbers record only moderate alcohol. There’s also high acidity that seems out of place for such a ripe wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This young wine is tough in tannins and rather forward and jammy in blackberries, cherries and raspberries, with a sweet coating of oak. It’s a bit rustic, lacking some smoothness and finesse, but the fruit is very pure, and the bottle could develop in unpredictable ways over the years.

Crisp and clean, this wine refreshes with its bright citrus and fig flavors and acidity. It has a good body and a touch of cream.

Oak dominates this Chardonnay, flooding it with smoky toast and woodspice flavors on top of the green apples, pineapples and buttered popcorn. It’s crisp in acidity and slightly sweet.

Peachy Canyon NV Mustang Springs Ranch Port (Paso Robles); $40. What you need in a Port-style wine is sugary, caramelized sweetness, the deep, strong taste of fruit, high alcohol and crisp acidity. This wine has them all. But it lacks that extra depth and complexity that a Port wants, especially at this price. Still, a solid effort. —S.H.

A beautiful Sauvignon Blanc that shows such rich varietal character, it’s launched into true elegance. You’ll find spicy pineapple, lemongrass and vanilla flavors, with a creamy texture marked by crisp acids.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A good job from Sauvignon specialist Dry Creek, although one wishes it were a little drier. Still, the citrus, fig, melon and oak flavors are tasty, and firmed up with crisp acidity.
