Scents of greens and baked acorn squash are tinged with gaminess, while the palate offers unsweetened tea, red plums, and an odd note of MSG. This finishes with a not unpleasant vegetal ray. —K.F.

This is a very good example of the varietal’s telltale aromas of sweet peas and boxwood. Comparative aromas of fresh herbs and toasty tropical fruit carry vividly to the palate. The finish offers toast and herbs.

Blackened meat, brown sugar and wet, dark earth aromas are countered by black cherry and plum, which extend to the palate along with notes of radicchio and eucalyptus. Toasty layers of oak are present at all stages, similar to cinnamon breakfast cereal. Best Buy. —K.F.

This family winery’s fortified wine is made every year, but only 200 cases make it to the U.S. What is a hanepoot? This “honey pot” of a wine is made from Muscat d’Alexandria, or Muscatel to some. In the bottle, it is full of complex flavors. Notes of luscious honey, candied lemon peel, dried pineapple, papaya and mango all vie for center stage. Extremely viscous and rich, this might benefit from a touch more acidity.
