Sémillon may well be the best white wine made in Washington, and Dunham’s is right at the top of the list. Barrel fermented, estate grown, and showing plenty of toasty new wood, it’s deliciously ripe and sweetly fruity, like succulent peaches and fresh citrus.

While two of our tasters found this wine raisiny and overripe, the other lauded it for its supple tannins, bright acidity and blackberry pie flavors. There’s also a heavy overlay of toasty, vanilla- and cinnamon-laden oak, which will please some and turn off others. A love-it-or-hate-it wine.

This is glorious stuff. Dunham’s first vineyard designated Cab is an absolute home run. Pure, dense Cabernet flavors fill the glass, at once forward and open, yet firm and concentrated. The lush black fruits roll through followed with lacy layers of smoke, tea, earth and tobacco. This wine just keeps on going; cellar it if you can keep your hands off it, or treat yourself and drink it today.

Young and tight, this was fermented almost entirely in stainless, with a small percentage in neutral oak. Acids are true and bright, and the fruit a mix of apple, pear and white peach. There’s a little heat in the finish; an indication that this is a substantial wine that can stand up to spicier dishes—something like tandoori chicken might be just the ticket.

Winemaker Eric Dunham says this is the winery’s best-selling red. The basically Bordeaux blend now includes about 13% Syrah, which stands out in the nose as an earthy, composty note. This wine needs just a little time to breathe open, and then the mix of tangy red fruits, spice, earth and toast comes into play. Flavors follow, mixing black cherry, berry and balsamic.

An intriguing scent of sweet curry jumps out, setting off this distinctive Syrah whose ripe berry fruit is wrapped in exotic spices and light, but pretty barrel flavors. It’s sharply defined and still rather tight, and needs further bottle age to show its best.

Vivid and potent, the ultraripe fruit maintains its poise, despite the almost 15% alcohol, with high-altitude flavors that seem to etch the fruit in fierce relief. Bright raspberry, strawberry and cherry flavors mingle in a blend that is still elegant, still balanced, though immensely powerful.

The first thing you notice, apart from the density and magnificent color of this wine, is the perfume. Floral, complex and inviting with spicy citrus scents, it sets up the wine with an elegant, inviting entry that brings nuance and subtlety to a variety that can sometimes behave like an overblown Zinfandel. Here it is world class.

The second Syrah for this cult winery, and again it is bursting with rich, black fruit flavors. A lovely, sweet nose shows mixed berry, gingerbread and vanilla scents, which lead into sweet, appealing fruit. Maybe not quite as big and powerful as the ’99, but it’s a beautifully balanced and thoroughly delicious effort. —P.G.

Dunham’s Riesling, from the same vineyard that supplies grapes for the winery’s best red wines, is a rich, luscious, off-dry wine, fresh and loaded with flavors of just-picked peaches.
