Powerful and intense nose but overly aggressive I feel with bitter aromas from high alcohol, but there is also deep rich fruit putting forth black cherries and plums in a ripe stew; at first the wine is sweet and ripe in the mouth with sweet cherry flavors mixing with touches of tar and earth, but then there is a full frontal assault of huge dry tannins that engage in a push-pull with the fruit, finally winning out; the finish is woody and dry as a consequence, but there is a lot of integration of the elements.

What can one say about these idiosyncratic wines, this bottle from David Albright’s collection of Dunn; huge nose, dense and inscrutable, loaded with dark and brooding aromas, a Wagnerian wine if there ever was one; big gripping flavors with impenetrable tannins, chocolate and black currants, still quite closed and unwilling to give up its secrets; long and rich finish, but you are left with a sense of expectation of things to come. This presents a more traditional nose with lots of black fruits, licorice, tar, mixed with a wonderfully exotic and perfumed tapestry that weave in layers of complex aromas; wonderful in the mouth with sweet, ripe fruit; lots of fresh red cherry flavors, some quince and black plums; nicely integrated soft acidity that adds freshness and ameliorates the denseness of the fruit; big finish with well-balanced flavors that are succulent and focused.
