Thin, herbal and lacking in any varietal character.

With a color akin to Beaujolais Nouveau, and sweet berry and bubble gum aromas, you should proceed with caution. The palate is full of tart, heavy raspberry fruit, while the plump finish has some cheek-grabbing tannins and an odd buttery flavor. This wine is slightly strange and unlike your average Syrah.

With intense cedary aromas along with hints of campfire and Christmas spices, this rock-solid, tannic Merlot shows more wood notes than pure fruit. The palate has ample berry and cherry flavors, but also a strong dose of penetrating oak, as indicated before. And on the finish that wood turns sweet: you get a strong taste of marshmallow and vanilla.

An astoundingly low 12.9% alcohol may account for why it feels so light in the mouth. Out-of-the-bottle volatility on the nose subsides and reveals strawberry and oak aromas. Light red fruit, mushroom, soy and oak flavors are hardly typical of Cabernet, but it’s generic enough to be a decent party pour. —D.M

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Some good fruit gives this wine a solid foundation. It’s dark and rough, with black cherry and blackberry flavors, along with toasty coffee and some earthy ash. The tannins are on the rough and rugged side, and the wine has plenty of power. It finishes with hints of chocolate and tannin.

A step up from the last time we reviewed an E.B. Foote Syrah, this version combines bright berry flavors with peppery notes in a plump, mouthfilling wine that turns tart on the finish.

This is very simple, very neutral white wine, acidic and plain, with no defining varietal character.

Dill and bell pepper smells and flavors dominate. This type of Cabernet was quite common in Washington 15-20 years ago. Very tannic, herbal and dry.

This has the racy authority of Dry Creek Zins, with splendid, high acid raspberry flavors, and holds its alcohol (15.6%) well, without cutting out the grace notes of flower and citrus. It’s a Rosenblum style of Zin, and the fact that it was made in Washington shows that there is real potential for this grape in a state where it was barely a curiosity a decade ago.

The Perfect à Trois is 70% Cab Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Cab Franc. It shows more new oak—particularly vanilla and toasted coconut flavors—but the fruit is substantial and carries through. There is a volatile lift to the flavors that some will object to, but others will find quite refreshing. All in all it’s very nicely done
