Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This offering features dark-skinned fruit notes tinged with hints of chocolate and raisin, yet seems to open up with air to show more freshness and intriguing peppery spice. Richly tannic, yet round and soft, with a velvety finish.

Guigal’s entry-level Côte-Rôtie seems rather tannic at this moment, but does have ample spice, cassis and prune flavors. Lacks a bit of richness and flesh; give it a few years’ time to come back around. Drink 2009–2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is almost certainly the most famous Côte Rôtie from the best vineyard in the appellation. It is a wine for power. Dry fruits and tanninc aromas give an immediate sense of structure and strength. On the palate, it is wild, savage almost, with huge tannins and untamed exotic perfumes. The wood—42 months in new wood—seems almost incidental to the power of the fruit. The aging potential is obviously enormous.

Even though the 42 months this wine has spent in new wood give it an intensely toasty character, the enormously soft, perfumed fruits and ripe, sweet flavors that go along with the wood produce a finely tuned, balanced wine that should age well over many years. As an expression of pure Syrah, there are few better.

A firm, dry, foursquare wine that has power and structure rather than the immediate perfumes of La Mouline, the partner cuvée from Guigal. This is the wine for those who want power with big tannins, and they don’t come more powerful or tannic than this. Its aging potential is enormous: after 10 years there should be more sign of the perfumed fruit which is there, somewhere.

The perfect combination of elegance and purity of fruit give this famous wine, a blend of fruit from both slopes of the hills above Ampuis, a great sense of style as well as power. The Syrah perfumes, at their richest and coolest, combine with black fruits to give an overwhelming impression of immense fruit flavors.

Guigal’s 2005 rosé handily eclipses most other Côtes-du-Rhône rosés, boasting bold cherry fruit, hints of creamy chocolate and a rich, medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel. It’s almost a light red wine in color and character, yet stays true to its rosé roots in its crisp, mouthwatering finish. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine spends 38 months in new wood, and the question is whether the fruit can support it. Yes, but barely, since the spice, tannins and dryness all come from the wood, not the fruit. Maybe in 10 years’ time there will be a chance for black fruits and the perfumed flavors to come through.

Apart from the fact that this wine comes from a small parcel that is itself called Saint-Joseph, the other curiosity of this wine is its label, which is designed like a banknote, by the man who used to design French francs (now, of course, out of a job). The wine inside the bottle is powerful and concentrated, flavored heavily with new wood, vanilla and spicy fruits. Guigal believes it is possible to make great Saint-Joseph, and this wine certainly proves the point.

A massive wine, with its opaque, dense purple color, its huge tannins and its tight, powerful structure. When it develops—maybe in 10 or 15 years’ time—the perfumed, juicy Syrah fruits that are just suggested for the moment are going to be as dominant as the tannins are now. What a wine it will be then.
