Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With a prettier nose than Easton’s smaller-production Monarch Mine Vineyard Barbera, this one from the Shenandoah’s Cooper Ranch has violets and red cherry and a teasing tartness on the finish, with fine texture and balance throughout. Juicy, well-made and exhibiting its time spent in oak

The texture stands out on this dry, balanced wine. It’s all velvet and silk in the mouth, almost like Pinot Noir, but everything else screams Zinfandel. The flavors are wild and exuberant, of innumerable wild berries, pepper, licorice and sweet, smoky bacon. Should develop over the next four years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dry, crisp in acidity and balanced, with citrus flavors, this is a refreshingly clean wine. It could use more fruity concentration, though, as it’s thin and watery in the finish.

If you’re looking for a classic Foothills Zin, briary and brambly, with the tannic strength to cut through lamb or short ribs, try this one. It’s bone dry and fruity, with a rich sweetness to the finish.

A Sierra Foothills Sauvignon Blanc with incredibly inviting aromatics of grass, grapefruit and melon that evolves into a delicious texture that’s light, dry and yet still somehow rich with crisp acidity. So good for summer and fall.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With very slight oak, but aged on the lees, this Sauvignon Blanc has richness that outshines the underlying fruit, which suggests lemons and limes. The wine was not put through the malolactic fermentation, so acidity is brisk. Good job for a fancy wine at a decent price.

Here’s a clean, sound wine that offers tons of Zinny character at a fair price. It’s dry and balanced and tannic, with rich, deep flavors of wild black and blue berries, currants, cola, coffee, leather, spices and sweet oak.

A sophisticated, swanky Zinfandel, although it’s gentle and delicious enough to appeal to anybody who likes a full-bodied red wine. Floods the mouth with blackberry, cherry, chocolate, bacon, pepper and charred barrel flavors that go on and on. Drink this beautiful Zin with steaks, chops, roasts and hard cheeses.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Acidity dominates this wine, giving it a tart, almost sour taste. Couple that with the sizable tannins, and you have an uncomfortable wine. Call it rustic, old world. The blackberry, currant, coffee and herb flavors are fine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very dry, tannic and acidic, in the manner of Barbera, a wine that’s not offering much charm now. Fans of the variety will like its unrelieved austerity. The flavors of are blackberries and espresso.
