Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A big, brawny, high-alcohol Zin, dry and fairly tannic, and balanced in cherry, tobacco, herb and cocoa flavors. There’s nothing subtle about this exuberant wine, which will be great with a big piece of red meat.

They say these vines are 121 years old, and certainly, the wine they produce is concentrated. The winemaker, Van Williamson, finds nutmeg, fir, white pepper, tobacco, raspberry and strawberries, which sounds about right. It’s also a little more tart than the magnificent Zeni bottling.

There’s 19% Syrah and 5% Petite Sirah blended in, making for a succulent wine, with spicy, lively fruit leading the charge. There’s enough acid to give it structure and balance, but not so much that the wine seems edgy or sour. Full bodied, mouthfilling, flavorful and distinctive.

Tannic, alcoholic nose, with a softer, rosier color tending toward brick. Old vines, soft, sweet, ancient flavors. The wine feels a little bit pushed — the alcohol is too high, and the finish is harsh, tannic and hot.

Certainly a step down from Edmeades’s single-vineyard Zins from the Ridge, but not by much. Rich and earthy and dry, with berry and tobacco flavors and a spicy finish that lasts for a long time. The wine has a plush, smooth mouthfeel that’s sheer pleasure.

Very different in character from the Zeni and Ciapusci bottlings, reflecting another terroir. From the slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, a brambly, jammy wine with clove and tobacco notes, and a rough-and-tumble mouthfeel. Finishes a bit earthy and sharp. Contains 23% Syrah and Petite Sirah.

From an underrated North Coast winery making some of the best Zins in the state. You’ll go wild over the bold complexity of this beauty. Packs twice the power of most Zins and gets away with it. This is a wine to show a visitor from foreign shores what California Zin is all about.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The winemaker chose to allow the wine to get to 16.1% alcohol instead of keeping lots of sugar. The result is an interesting, very good wine, although it’s tough to figure out when to drink it, and with what. Dry to off-dry, it has raspberry, cherry, cola and spice flavors, and is very balanced.

From the interior Redwood Valley appellation comes this slightly stewed Zin, with flavors of cherry and raspberry-pie filling. It’s totally dry, and the high alcohol is a fundamental part of the Zin experience.

Edmeades, a true Mendocino pioneer, has crafted an enormously likeable Zin, deeply flavored in black currant, cherry and black raspberry-pie filling and chocolaty, spicy deliciousness. But for all its size and high alcohol, the wine retains a silky, elegant mouthfeel.
