Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Released quite young, this is a wine to decant. It’s big and dark and tannic, tight as a tick, with grainy, textural tannins wrapped heavily around tart blue and purple berries. Though the flavors are pure Syrah, the structure and density are Cabernet-like, and though it’s a guess, the odds are this is a wine to cellar for at least a decade.

Emmy is 70% Mourvèdre and 30% Syrah blend. The fruit expression is pure and powerful, an intense burst of raspberry and cranberry, anchored in mineral and chalk. Only neutral oak was used, so the fruit is framed beautifully by the acids and tannins, and it is so pure and resonant that it is hard to believe that this wine won’t age beautifully for a decade or more.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From the Evergreen vineyard, and again it was barrel fermented in neutral French oak. The aromas are wild and true, sweet herb and grass, suffused with marmalade and honey. The wine is intensely bright and spicy, with sharply-defined citrus fruits and rinds, and exceptional length.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An immense wine, inky purple, packed with black and purple fruits, laced with smoke and espresso, and finished with fine-grained, substantial tannins. This Cab lives up to its name––it’s a Big Muthah as well as Papa, and should be cellared for optimal expression.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Deep purple, it explodes into lush fruit flavors of tangy boysenberry, blackberry, black cherry and cassis, with a smoky black licorice streak woven through. The tannin management is exceptional here––firm and substantial, without any bitter or green aspect. This is a supple, powerful and ageworthy wine with depth and muscle unusual in this price range.

This is as good as the best from California—textural, creamy, a delicious mix of lemon custard, meringue, caramel, papaya and toasted coconut. At one quarter the price of comparable bottles, this young wine just seduces from the instant it hits the tongue.

This new offering from rising star Efesté is a wine of amazing grace, polish and depth—a young wine with a dense core of berry fruit flavors, a wrapping of mineral and steel, ripe and tightly wound tannins, and notes of coffee and graphite stacked through the long finish.

Chris Upchurch (of DeLille Cellars) is the consulting winemaker at Efesté, and this is the equivalent of DeLille’s D2—an exemplary second label, made to a very high standard. It’s a substantial 50/50 Cabernet-Syrah blend, taking power and structure from the Cab, and polish and richness from the Syrah. Multi-layered black fruits run into grainy, licorice and coffee-flavored tannins, with firm acid underpinnings.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s pure Cabernet Sauvignon, dense, dark and what might be called brooding. Despite the massive fruit, the darker notes of black olive and earth are not submerged in sweetness. In fact, there are Stag’s Leap-like flavors of rock and mineral. Along with the sleek cassis and black cherry, come highlights of bitter chocolate.

The odd name (which has something to do with a pretty waitress and a long night in Australia) is pronounced kay-lee. The impeccable grape sources include old vine Boushey and Red Mountain’s Klipsun and Kiona vineyards. It is tight, glossy, dense and layered with raspberry pie, blackberry and other racy red fruits. The finish winds into coffee liqueur. It’s a seamless and powerful wine, sappy and seductive.
