Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Much like the 2004, this wine straddles traditional and modern lines. The nose offers light raisin, spearmint, brick dust and leafy red fruit aromas, while the palate may seem acidic and sour to some but reflective of old Rioja to others. Strong American oak accents of dill, coconut and vanilla are present on the palate and finish. Drink now through 2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smoky oak and dark cherry fruit with herb accents complement each other well in this medium-weight, even red. Leathery hints add complexity, and this tasty, straightforward Rioja never get harsh or astringent. Drink now–2004. —M.M.

Good, clean and pleasant. The nose has pure apple and pear aromas along with a hint of vanilla and powdered sugar. It’s fresh in the mouth, with lively apple, white peach and green banana flavors. Closes well and stays zesty and true from start to finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Typical Garnacha-Tempranillo rosado, with fresh berry aromas and bright peach, nectarine and apple flavors. More lean and streamlined than bulky, so you won't find much in the way of red-fruit character. Clean, persistent and fresh.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Nothing wrong with this crisp, tight number from Rioja. It’s so clear in color that it’s almost translucent, but the palate has good flavors of kiwi, green melon and lime. Precise on the tongue, with a chalky scour to the finish. It’s your basic white Rioja done right. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd. Best Buy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Seductive and classy aromas of sandalwood, cola, spice, licorice and leather amount to pretty much everything you could ask for. Ripe and complex in terms of its earth and tree-fruit flavors. Finishes svelte and sturdy, but with ample vanilla, toffee and tobacco nuances. Classic gran reserva. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tilts a bit toward the ripe side, with sweet, mature aromas of blueberry, raisin and vanilla. It’s fleshy and soft in terms of feel, with earthy, warm flavors of fig, berry and molasses. Drink now for its traditional integrity and tobacco-like qualities; it’s not improving.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An opening of spice, toasted fruit, leather and lemon peel is attractive in the traditional sense. Medium bodied, with tangy red-cherry flavors up front and some citrus in the rear. Finishes light and fresh, with touches of vanilla and fresh-chopped dill. Very drinkable if you like a more classic-style Rioja.

El Coto Tempranillo Blend - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An oaky, modern-style wine with a staunch mocha and vanilla influence, but the fruit is ripe and rich enough to handle it. Spicy and grainy on the nose, with vanilla and resin seeping through. The palate remains woody but is full of berry flavors, while the omnipresent barrel influence carries onto the rich, ripe finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Only slightly reedy and sharp on the nose. After that, the wine shows nice fruit and balance throughout. There are snappy cherry and raspberry flavors, and the finish offers proper finality in the form of light oak and cleansing acidity. Drink now for an easy taste of Rioja.
