From a hilly vineyard. The winemaker says he wants to recreate Chianti, but it’s hard to imagine a Chianti with this much sweetness. Tastes like raspberry jam straight out of the jar, with soft tannins to give it a bit of structure. Awkward.

As good as Mendocino Petite Sirah gets, this is a big, robust wine of heroic proportions. Monster extraction of blackberry and plum flavors, rich, thick, dry tannins, and a lipsmackingly good finish that coats the palate with flavor. Preternaturally perfect with barbecue, a match made in heaven.

From an appellation long noted for Syrah, a dark, dense, richly textured wine, with big flavors of blackberries, tobacco and herbs, and earthy but smooth tannins. It’s bone dry with good acids, an immature wine that needs ribs or similar fare to accompany it. Should age well.
