Elegant and focused, with red-berry, cake and fruit aromas. Juicy blackberry, cassis and chocolate flavors. Very good, with a well-balanced mouthfeel. The long finish with cocoa and herb notes features an enlivening, appealing tartness.

This ranks as the most expensive Barbera we know of, and while good, you can’t help but question the price. It’s a wood cutter’s dream, with the hefty oak throughout manifested in the form of coffee and toast. Everything a good wine requires is here, and it improves exponentially with time in the glass.

Dense and chocolaty, yet also imbued with airy scents of red berries, this is a finely tuned wine worthy of attention despite not being a cru. Tar and cherries take charge on the palate, picking up nuances of treebark, leather and citrus, before ending with velvety tannins. Drink now–2015.

Elio Altare is among the most important producers of the La Morra area of Barolo and this non-cru wine shows his talents. There are smoky notes of roasted hazelnut and chocolate that frame lively aromas of cassis and red currants. There’s great depth and delicacy here and the wine boasts polished tannins and a long finish. Drink after 2010.
