Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Elvio Cogno’s Cascina Nuova Barolo is the darling of the 2006 vintage and Ravera, a more austere and reserved expression, is still something of an awkward teenager at this point. Mature berry tones and candied fruit come forward as do notes of cinnamon and Graham cracker. The finish is smooth and silky.

Elvio Cogno is a dedicated, producer who crafts exciting and consistent wines year after year. This sophisticated Riserva Barolo from the 2005 vintage delivers dark color and concentration, ripe cherry, raspberry roll-up, black granite notes and bright menthol layers that add personality to the finish.

In need of bottle aging, Cogno’s ’99 Ravera blends molasses with dates and figs to give the impression of a spiced fruitcake impregnated with tannins instead of rum. Give it until 2010, when it should begin to open up.

This is a clean Barbera, but one with individual personality. The palate is tight and tart, with cherry and cranberry. The finish is mellow and cooling, with notes of cola, root beer and bark. The structure is tight as a drum. This is a fine wine to accompany Italian dishes.

Here’s a rich and thickly extracted Barbera d’Alba with purplish hues to its ruby color and bright aromas of cherry, black currants and cassis. Like many of the wines from the Alba area, we notice quite a lot of toast here that comes forth as cinnamon, vanilla and exotic spice.

Wow, what a wonderful wine, delivering rich notes of black fruit, vanilla, cherry and spice. But the aromas are in no way obvious. In fact, this is an ethereal and elegant wine that pays attention to the little details, like the light shadings of polished stone and violets that liven up the long finish. Drink after 2018.

Delicious and lively, with berry, chocolate and herb aromas. Cherry and chocolate flavors follow on the the palate. Has a plummy mouthfeel and the finish is fairly long, with moderate tannins and a dusty cocoa note.

Barolo Bricco Pernice shows elegant and sophisticated layers of forest fruit, cassis, cola, granite and light smoke. The tannins are firm, drying and would help pair this pretty wine with creamy wild mushroom risotto.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Good raw materials here, but the fruit appears burdened by the heavy dose of oak. Aromas of menthol open to blackberry and sweet-plum flavors, which struggle to be noticed. Heavy on the wood; toasty oak lovers will delight in it.

Elvio Cogno is a winery to watch closely in the future. These are exciting wines, loaded with charm and personality. The 2005 Ravera cru expression is tightly packed with fragrant fruit, floral and spice aromas and the mouthfeel is smooth, silky and long. Drink after 2015.
