The packaging is underwhelming, so much so that you worry that this is just another generic Shiraz from whereversville. But that’s not the case at all. The wine is sexy and smooth, with light minty aromas accenting solid berry fruit. The palate is clean and zesty, with dark-fruit flavors as well as black olive, cola and toast. Integrated and ready to drink.

A varietal Monastrell (Mourvèdre) that starts with a whole lot of spice, coffee and mint but not a ton of fruit. The palate is more zesty and sharp than you might expect, with grab and some sharpness to the meaty Monastrell fruit. Finishes a little short and flat, but will do well over the short term.

A little bramble and pickle on the nose tells us that this may never have gotten 100% ripe and over the top. Still, we admire and are intrigued by this Alicante blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% each of Syrah and Merlot. Feelwise, it’s a little bit chunky but hardly fat, and the flavors are plummy, red and a touch sharp in the middle. Drink now.

Clean, solid aromas of black cherry and berry are just what you want from Spanish Monastrell, and while this isn’t the most unique or original wine, it sure is tasty, balanced and pleasing. Flavors of lightly baked black fruits are lush, while the finish is medium-long and easygoing. Hard to find anything wrong with this affordable red from Alicante.

Fairly hard and minty on the nose, with dry raspberry aromas. Acidity is high and the feel is rough, although the flavors of red fruits and cranberry are zesty and forward due to the wine’s blazing acids. Very snappy and a bit too regular tasting to justify the high price.

Dark and intense is this Cabernet-Merlot-Syrah blend. The nose offers smoky leather and hot earth, but also a sweet perfume dominated by violets. Quite drinkable now, with soft tannins and easygoing black fruit. Best to get this one over the next year or two, before the fruit fades.

A nosing reveals just about everything but the kitchen sink. There’s peanut butter, honey, mango and banana, and then later more elaborate sweet fruits rise up on the palate. Maybe too simple to be great, but very good and likable.
