Here’s a Bordeaux blend with some good, rich flavors and fine tannins. Has none of those annoying raisiny notes you sometimes get from the appellation, and the alcohol is a modest 13.2%. —S.H.

Talk about an assorted but attractive bouquet: this has lemon, peach, dried herbs—even some honey. The flavors veer mostly toward citrus—predominantly lemon and orange. But there’s a touch of sweet pineapple in there, too. The finish is spicy and maintains the citrus from the palate, but it does tail off a bit heavy and hot.

Intensely flavorful, a delight on the palate, just brimming with bright citrusy, smoky flavors and a honeyed finish. Young, fresh acidity makes the wine drink clean and juicy. This is first-rate Fume, and a testament to its appellation.

Alas, the long name can’t compensate for the deficiencies here. While it’s very sweet, it’s also sharp and hot, with a cloying, syrupy mouthfeel.

If you like your Pets awesomely dark and extracted, with enormous fruit and lavish oak, you’ll enjoy this only-in-California wine. Tastes like a rum-soaked blackberry and chocolate cake, sprinkled with cinnamon, with a peppery edge. But it’s dry and soft.

Unpleasantly sharp in acids, and burdened with residual sugar, this is a hard wine to like.

This is a tasty Zin of moderate weight with excellent balance. Opening with a densely aromatic nose of cloves, cinnamon, roses, and pepper, it offers a palate full of cherry, licorice, tobacco and spice flavors. A tasty finish with moderate tannins complete this lovely bottling.

An awkward wine that keeps its alcohol moderate at the cost of residual sugar. Some will like this old-fashioned, jug-wine style.

Very dark ruby in color with some dark berry, earth, cinnamon and herbal (basil) notes on the nose. Nice texture and feel without being heavy. Has some tomato and pepper notes also seen in other Paso Robles Cabernets. Nice fruit-to-acid balance and a lengthy finish. A well-crafted and very friendly wine. Contains 18% Petite Sirah.
