Pet fans will like it. Fans of delicacy and elegance may shake their heads at the alcohol level—early 16%—and almost Port-like flavors. But the wine is fully dry.

Epiphany Petite Sirah - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Why are all of Epiphany’s ‘04 Syrahs so high in alcohol? This one is 16%. Granted, the vintage was a scorcher, but others in Santa Barbara managed to produce beautiful, balanced Syrahs in ‘04. Not this one, which is hot and simple.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Big, thick, soft, gooey, delicious, a little hot, that begins to describe this Rhône blend, which is Syrah, Grenache and a dash of Petite Sirah. It’s all essence of cherries, melted chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon.

Epiphany Rhône-style Red Blend - 2003

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Way too hot for a table wine, with prickly, unpleasant heat, the result of 16.1% alcohol and insufficient fruit.

Epiphany Syrah - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Really not a very likeable Syrah despite some tasty cherry fruit flavors. The problem is enormously high alcohol, 15.9%, that makes the wine hot, and a near absence of acidity, which makes it cloying. The imbalance makes the tannins astringent.

Epiphany Syrah - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells fresh and clean, with vibrant aromas of sun-ripened summer peaches drizzled with vanilla and cream. The fruity flavors are very bright and sharp, underlaid with a rich honeyed sweetness. A long, spicy finish completes the picture.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Showing a bit of age, with underlying peach fruit beginning to pick up baked pie crust, coconut and meringue notes. Complex and layered in the mouth and very dry, with fruity, mineral flavors. —S.H.

Epiphany Pinot Blanc - 1999

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With the racy acidity this variety is known for when grown in a cool place, this is a good palate cleanser. It’s a little on the candied side, with candied pineapple flavors, but that zestiness is really nice.

Epiphany Pinot Gris - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A Rhone blend dominated by 60% Grenache. The remaining Syrah comes from the same vineyard as Fess Parker’s amazing Ô99 Syrah, but it’s overshadowed by the Grenache’s cranberry, mint and camphor side, the result of the varietal’s tendency to overcrop. An obvious touch of residual sugar makes for a sweetish finish. This wine is unfinished, a work in progress.

Epiphany Rhône-style Red Blend - 1999

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine has pretty flavors of lemons, apricots and peaches, and is just a little sweet on the tongue, although crisp natural acidity creates balance. There’s an oily, glyceriney smoothness to the mouthfeel that adds interest. A new line from Fess Parker.
