The giveaway that this is Shiraz is the palate’s caramelly accents. Otherwise, this wine is heavy on the cherry—and on the tart, lean side at that. Finishes with some fleshy plum and strawberry notes. —D.M.

There's a hint of sur-maturité to this wine's cassis flavors, giving it a chocolate and dried-fruit character to go with hints of eucalyptus. That ripeness gives it a rich, soft, warm character that makes it instantly approachable. Drink now-2012 or so.

Despite carrying a lot of alcohol (16% on the label), this powerful mix of mocha, caramel and stewed berries does a good job of hiding it. At first, it seems soft and creamy in texture, but it turns firmer, chewier and more serious on the finish, adding in a hint of espresso. Opt for drinking this over the near term with grilled beef.

An easy-to-drink wine (though some reviewers think that it will get more complex in two or three years), the Eppalock Ridge has a full, rich mouthfeel rounded out by blackberry, licorice and briary flavors. Black pepper and tart black fruit at the beginning, and on the finish.
