Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Barrel fermented and aged sur lie in 40% new French oak. The 2008 vintage has kept its acids (hence balance) better than the 2007; though there is still some volatility, it’s just over the threshold level for most people. There’s plenty of fruit—banana, papaya, pineapple—along with the barrel-generated streaks of caramel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Crisp and clean, this all-purpose white wine will please those who enjoy moderate (12.7% alcohol), stainless steel-fermented wines with clean fruit flavors. Apples and pears combine in the body of the wine, with a hint of cheese sticks in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pear drop aromas lead into a wine with less-than-optimal fruit. There is a suggestion of pear, but also overripe orange juice and cardboard. It doesn’t quite come together.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is Erath’s big production white wine. It’s well-balanced, with moderately ripe apple and pear flavors, some noticeable tannins, and firm acids. A solid, middle-of-the-road effort.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pronounced aromas of ripe white peaches and mandarin oranges lead to a fruity wine; clean and zesty. A little simple, with a dash of sweetness. Low oak. A friendly everyday cocktail-style wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This limited-edition Pinot Gris was barrel-fermented and aged sur lie. It broadens out the palate and adds layers of buttered popcorn, caramel and toasted hazelnuts to the apple and pear fruit flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Concentrated and ripe, perhaps just a bit stewed, but textured and lively, with plenty of front-loaded flavor. Though slightly raisiny, the flavors are inviting and fruit-driven. Ready to drink right now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very pure Chardonnay, with lemony-smoky aromas and lots of oak. Rather tightly wound now, it’s crisp and oaky, with brilliant acidity. Refined and elegant, with a long, spicy finish. Austere and minerally in the Chablis style. Only 110 cases but worth the search.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Erath’s pinot gris is a tart, lemony wine, with a slightly waxy, muted flavor, and a hint of sweatiness to the nose. It takes a distant second to the winery’s excellent pinot blanc.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pretty, pale straw, with nuanced scents and flavors straddling the pear/melon axis. The alcohol is a sensible 13%, and the wine has a lovely balance without sacrificing complexity.
