A tight, chewable wine that’s 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. That Grenache element is no wallflower; the wine has a candied side while the Tempranillo component is also sweeter and less polished than a high-grade Rioja. Tastes a bit like strawberry and raspberry preserves, with mild reediness and a long finish. Not run-of-the-mill; sort of feisty and edgy.

Surprisingly serious for Airen, the workhorse white of La Mancha. There was clearly no glue factor, a k a the brandy distillery, ever in line for these grapes, which were vinified in that clean, steely style that works well in cool years like 2007. Smells and tastes like a good northern Italian Pinot Bianco or blend. Dry melon and papaya for fruit, and a little almondy. Good with fish.

Colorful, ribald and jammy wine that gets more floral and balanced as it opens. What starts out big and aggressive settles with time and should work with a wide range of foods. Sappy fruit is the forerunner, and there’s heat as well.
