A little funky and loud at first but time reveals dark fruit and roasted earth. Comes on big and ripe in the mouth, with cherry and plum leading the way. Maybe it’s a bit common and chunky, like your average New World red, but it has its merits and goes down well.

This three-grape blend runs heavy on the Carmenère, and overall it’s got more color and aromatic promise than results. The nose is round and sweet but the palate doesn’t match it; it tastes tangy and short, and there’s a raw feel coming courtesy of jagged tannins.

Estampa’s new crop of wines seem to be hit-and-miss. This blend of Syrah and 35% Cabernet and Merlot is a bit herbal and heavy. The palate shows prune flavors along with more generic red-fruit notes; finishes coarse. Not terrible but not interesting either.

It takes some getting used to if you’re going to like this wine. First off, there’s a wicked cat pee and green shot to the nose, both of which are classic Casablanca Sauvignon smells. But the citrus and other fruits that are there to offset the pungency don’t really step up and do the job. So ultimately the wine has an awful lot of pickle, tart passion fruit and celery.

More ripe and round than herbal or earthy, and right there you’re ahead of the game. This wine has live-wire cassis and cherry flavors; has swagger and gritty, solid flavors.

Ripe almost to the point of overdone, but then it draws itself back. The nose is one part baked and one part ripe cassis and blackberry. And the palate is more or less the same thing: cassis, berry, savory roasted flavors and chocolate are all present and accounted for. Finishes with a splash of BBQ and brandied cherry. A big, broad blend of Syrah, Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec. Drink now through 2010.

Estampa is fond of blending three grapes together, and here they have succeeded in marrying Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. The nose is deep and rich, with smooth black-fruit aromas and tobacco. The palate is saturated but steady, with plum, chocolate and oily tobacco flavors. Quite warm, earthy and rewarding for under $20.

Some grapes should not be forced together. This is a sweaty, aggressive white with citrus and grapefruit flavors and a bullish feel. Underwhelming despite being big in size.

Powdery apple and pear aromas lead to melon scents, while the flavors of white fruits, pineapple and banana are sweet and a touch salinic. This is a round, plump, drink-now wine that finishes quickly enough and is never rough or overly demanding.

Seems as though Estampa did well with its value-priced red wines in 2006. This Carmenère-Merlot blend is dark, sweet and nicely balanced. It gets the important things like tannins and acidity right, and then really pours on the ripeness of fruit. Delivers a lot for an under-$10 wine.
