Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark for a Pinot, suggesting great extraction, and vibrantly fruity. The flavors are rich and sweet with cherry and black raspberry, accented by Oriental spices and oak. Silky and elegant in the mouth, but a firm backbone of acidity lends structure.

Starts off with rich, fragrant aromas of ripe peaches, mangos and flowers, with vanilla and buttery-oaky notes. There’s lots of buttercream in the mouth, along with ripe, forward tropical fruit and spice flavors and a high acidity level that creates a searing, mouthwatering quality. Good stuff.

A beautiful Pinot Noir, deeply flavored and complex. It shows a silky, elegant mouthfeel, with powerful flavors of cherry and raspberry purée, mocha, Dr. Pepper and smoky sandalwood. Feels solid and impressive in texture, an important wine, and will drink well though 2014.

Etude’s 2005 defines power and authority, Napa style. It’s hard to imagine a Cabernet Sauvignon more explosive in blackberry, cherry and chocolate fruit flavor. Yet the structure is superb, with firm but ultrarefined tannins providing an architecture to house all that richness. Beautiful now, and should age gracefully for a decade. Relatively easy to find, with 4,600 cases produced.

Dry, crisp and lavendery, like a Provençal rosé, but distinctly California due to the ripe, forward cherry and strawberry flavors. This blush wine is really fun to drink. It’s as easy as a summer afternoon, yet has the complexity to stand up to a rich, ample bouillabaisse.

Fresh and vibrant, showing berry-cherry cola, tea, clove, vanilla and smoky flavors that are just delicious. The wine is accented by youthful acidity. If you like your Pinots young, this is for you. However, it should knit together and improve with some cellaring. Best 2007–2010.

Rather herbal and spicy, bursting with anise, Asian spicebox aromas. Cherries and sweet herbs in the mouth, with a spicy finish. The soft tannins make it instantly drinkable.

It’s hard to imagine a more voluptuous wine, but it’s also powerful and complex, offering up endlessly changing palate impressions. The primary flavor is ripe, juicy blackberries, while fine oak does its thing. The tannins are wonderfully soft and refined. With no Cabernet Sauvignon, and just a little Cab Franc and Petit Verdot, this wine restores my belief in Merlot as the seductive, sensual alternative to Cab.

Made in the Heirloom style, which is huge, extracted and potent. The ’07 shows the preternatural ripeness of the vintage, offering massive cherry and black raspberry fruit, along with sizable tannins. The winemaker has framed this power with considerable oak. The result admittedly is seismic, but it is another success for Heirloom, and is likely to age for at least a dozen years.

This has been one of Etude’s best bottlings, and 2007 was a great year. If you enjoy sheer, decadent deliciousness in your Pinot Noirs, this is one for you. The palate first is struck by the rich waves of cherry pie filling, raspberry essence and sweet, vanilla-tinged, smoky oak. Then it discovers the soft silkiness, and finally the firm, fine tannins kick in, providing structure. Just beguiling, and should develop in the bottle over the next 5–6 years.
