Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The company may be going through a troubled time, but based on this showing, the winemaking seems as sound as ever. Vanilla and toast elements are nicely integrated with the pear fruit, which adds a fresh, citrusy note on the finish. Medium-bodied, this seems nicely suited as a partner to mild chicken dishes where the subtle nutmeg and cinnamon spice notes will come to the fore. Drink now.

Seems a bit dilute, with low-intensity flavors of cherries and herbs. Clean and fresh; could use more weight and richness.

Earthy, meaty notes interwoven with an attractive pine scent make for a sexy nose. The palate is a bit simpler, with straightforward cherry and tart berry flavors. Tangy cranberry notes mark the finish. Drink now–2012.

E&T’s top red, the 1999 Redbrook Cabernet displays excellent depth, rich, slightly weedy cassis fruit and sizable helpings of tobacco and vanilla. The finish is long, and somehow combines mouthwatering flavors with mouth-drying tannins. Drink 2005–2012.

Smells fat, like cherry liqueur and white pepper. In the mouth, it’s medium-sized and decent weight; it’s a one-trick wine that gets the job done. Raspberry and plum fruit take on a hefty dose of oak through the finish. Imported by Scott Street Portfolio.

Caramel and butter dominate the flavor mix, imparting the suggestion of movie popcorn and buttered toast, partially balanced by crisp pineapple and citrus fruit.

This is a pretty interesting Sauvignon Blanc. White stone fruit aromas lead into a brisk, lemon-and-hay-flavored palate. Shows some anise and wax on the finish.

The first “G” is silent. Taste it blind and you’ll probably think that there’s some Sauvignon Blanc in here, so prevalent are the fresh grass and garden-vegetable notes on the nose and palate. Still, melon and peach fruit shines through. A clean, lean, refreshing wine, and a good bargain from Western Australia.

Has tannins the texture of bread flour or chalk, and flavors of wheat, soil and vibrant black plum. The nose smells like a forest (tree bark, earth, leaf) with a little eucalyptus and pepper thrown in. A very good value; Western Australian wines don’t come cheap.

A surprisingly average performance, given the good showing that E&T's Chardonnays made this year. Its flavors are fairly dilute yet still a little sour—grass and herb greenness, plus a rocky, quarrylike edge. Finishes short.
