Dry, peppery and lacking in elegance, this Malbec is herbal and dilute on the nose, with sweet and candied raspberry flavors. While this winery's red wines are usually very good, this isn't likely to do much for you.

This you just have to love, especially for the price. Starts with graham cracker, kirsch and black cherry aromas before transitioning to chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Shows subtle touches but a lot of Argentinean power and pizzazz. Restrained but ripe; robust yet suave.

Always one of the best Malbecs for the money. This French-owned estate doesn’t cut corners, so you get a serious red wine that’s heady, vigorous and authentic. The color is perfect, the bouquet smoky and penetrating, and the taste of berry fruit, spicy wood and vanilla convincing.

Big and burly at 14.5% alcohol, with blueberry, blackberry, fudge and earth on the nose. Very ripe and heady, with sweet fruit flavors and a ton of oak. Nothing wrong whatsoever, but it locks into a place and doesn’t budge. As a result, complexity is lacking.

Phebus is a new label from Fabre Montmayou, and frankly this wine has issues. It smells a lot like gumballs and a wet, dirty dog. It doesn’t have much substance or flow, and that gamy, wet-dog character is persistent, even on the flavor profile.

Mildly roasted and leafy, with dry berry aromas. This is ripe and juicy on the palate, with berry, black cherry and mocha flavors. Finishes almost creamy, with honest structure and medium-range tannins. Drink now.

Jumbled and jumpy on the nose, which struggles to find itself. Time gives this wine a chance to strut, and while it doesn’t ever find a great groove it does offer youthful plum and berry flavors followed by resiny tannins. A little too scattered and pocked to rate better.
