A rich, full nose of black fruit and spice gives this elegant Shiraz a big start. On the palate, a lovely balance of cedar, cherry, vanilla and spice, as well as measured acid and smooth tannins, give the wine food-friendly appeal. Approachable and classy.

Upfront aromas of ripe plum, tobacco and pepper lead this savory Shiraz from Fairview. On the palate, its dry plum, roasted meat and mint flavors are big and balanced. The long finish has a touch of menthol and pepper.

Classic Shiraz. Tart sweet berry flavors and ample oak are in full play. It’s already flavorful and well-balanced, with even, smooth tannins. Should be even better in six to twelve months.

Solid, medium-weight Shiraz with some structure. Displays briary, dark fruit with pepper and toasty oak accents. Very drinkable, with good fruit, not at all overly sweet or jammy, and mildly tangy tannins on the close.

Even and smooth yet somewhat thin, this is light in feel but with dark aromas and flavors. The tart blackberry-currant fruit wears dense, oak-derived espresso-black coffee accents. Still this vintage doesn’t deliver the weight or depth I had hoped for.

Handsome, almost too suave, with a complex, supple, tawny fruit wearing spice, coffee and oak accents. The flavors are darker, the feel a bit lighter than expected. Totally appealing, if a bit facile. Deeper, better defined fruit could propel this into the upper echelon. But it’s delicious as it is now.

Dominated by sweet sexy oak, this soft, creamy wine boasts aromas and flavors of caramel, nuts and chocolate—a sort of liquid Snickers bar that sneaks in a bit of dried plum flavor just to remind you that it’s made from grapes.

A rich nose of cherry, mocha and jam rolls into mouthfilling flavors that offer a spicy but elegant blend in this stylish Pinotage. Smoke, cherry and plum unfold in the mouth. The finish is lingering and spirited. Pair with spicy grilled lamb, steak, or even curry.

This wine would soothe most ills with its comforting, deep aromas of wheat bread, black plums and blueberry jam. Ditto for the palate, which also offers some toasty char. Finishes with an herbal twinge. —K.F.
