Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A cool, neutral wine that smells as much like mountain stream water as it does white fruits. Flavors of green apple and underripe nectarine are dry, clean, quiet and refreshing. Shows a mild almond-skin bitterness on the finish, but overall it’s much like a good Viura from Rioja, Spain.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Falernia hails from the northerly Elqui Valley, and its wines are unconventional and frankly all over the map as far as baseline quality goes. This blend of Carmenère and Syrah is funky and baked, with soft, unctuous fruit and a cooked, herbal taste to it. Candy and raisin are part of the jumbled package, and there’s heat on the finish. A few bright spots but some off points as well.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Quite green, with aromas of canned peas, ashtray and green tobacco. We know the Elqui Valley is a northern region with a cool climate, but this wine has so little fresh or tropical fruit that it tastes too much like green beans or asparagus. A classic case of vegetal SB.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Floral and mineral aromas tell you this isn’t run of the mill, and seeing that it’s from the emerging Elqui Valley in northern Chile, it’s not. Aromas of violet petals and slate rise above the norm, while the palate is rich, slick and tastes of truffle, licorice, pepper and blackberry. Fairly stylish and ready to drink now. Good complexity for a value-priced wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tobacco, green bean, floral and berry aromas make for a particular but not necessarily inviting nose, while the palate is warm and sticky, with candied, baked berry flavors and herbal qualities. Sweet and round on the finish, with a lasting carob flavor. Seems like northerly Elqui is not Carmenère country.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dusty apple, pear and other dry-fruit aromas give this clean wine a good but basic starting point. The palate is fresh but exceedingly simple in terms of its apple, kiwi and nectarine flavors. Pithy and bitter on the finish, but fresh. Tastes and smells like a standard white Rioja.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A little baked, warm and medicinal, but also an interesting and unique tasting wine. There’s a beefy, gummy weight to the palate, but also flavors of blackberry, herbs, soy sauce and brown sugar. Shows good points but rates out as a strange wine that confounds as much as it inspires.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Savory, minty, foresty and showing its own style and personality. Not a generic Syrah; there’s leather, fir tree and berry aromas, and then a large, mouthfilling palate full of savory, herbal berry flavors accented by oak and BBQ notes. Hard to peg as varietal Syrah but definitely a good wine with character.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rooty, rubbery aromas of tobacco, cola nut and tree bark cast a friendly shadow over earthy, spicy plum scents. Solid power and body, with roundness and a good mouthfeel. Nothing rugged or out of shape, with dry oak warming the finish. Not complex; easy to drink.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Aromas of burnt leaves, grilled meat and rubber/tar are sort of hard and dominant, but the palate is brighter and fruity, with lively raspberry and plum along with carob and olive flavors. Good but seems slightly stalky/herbal on the finish.
