A good wine, and an honest effort, but something didn’t cooperate. There’s a green, stalky edge to the berry fruit, and an astringent finish. Drink now, with rich meats and cheeses.

From century-old vines. An excellent wine defining the old-vine style. Ripe, fruity, and very extracted and spicy, but not over the top. Manages to keep the alcohol under control and achieves a claret-like balance and harmony.

Smells honeyed and tastes like one of those fruity bottled sodas. It’s a riot of peaches, pears and vanilla cream, with a honey-sweet finish.

A high-quality Zinfandel from an area more often associated with Pinot Noir, but with old vines that produce some of the state’s best Zins. Lots of blueberry, cherry and plum stuffed into this beauty. Superb structure, almost Cabernet-like in intensity. But, oh, the price!

A smooth-textured wine that tops out with some bright acidity. Nonetheless, it offers a pleasing blend of black cherry, raspberry, cola, coffee and spice notes. Zippy to the end.

This is a very aromatic wine, reminiscent of Riesling with its peach, apple and flowery flavors and hint of minerality. It’s dry and quaffable.

This is a hot, sweet Zinfandel, with an alcohol level of 15.4%. It’s very ripe and forward in jammy cherry-berry fruit, with a spicy edge of cola and mocha. It contains some Petite Sirah and Alicante, like an old-fashioned field blend.

This is some Zin. Big, textbook Sonoma County, filled with huge jammy young blackberry and boysenberry fruit and a solid dose of pepper. It’s dry, with rich tannins and that wild, brawny character only Zinfandel has. The alcohol is a modest 14.1%.
