Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s vibrant fresh fruit here in the form of cherries, forest berries and a touch of ripe strawberry backed by simple vanilla and spice. This is not an overly complex or cerebral wine, but it is a fresh, zesty one that would pair well with hearty bean soup or pasta.

The polar opposite of austere, this chunky Sangiovese yields bold aromas of berry syrup, cherry cough drop and cola. The palate is rich, with modest tannic firmness. Not overly concentrated or tight; it’s actually rather chewy and candied. Finishes meaty and easy.

Colorful and jammy, with a sweet nose of red licorice, cherry cough drop and violets. Quite a simple wine, with a soft, plump body and medium tannins. Seems a touch overweight and a bit short on balance. Imported by Vias Imports.

Wonderful smelling, with leather, clove and powerful black fruit. How nice to see a ’99 rosso doing so well now. The flavors on this wine are dynamite, a rustic and ready combo of cherry, cassis and blackberry. Finishes tight and firm, meaning it still has some time to go.

This is a beautifully extracted expression of Colorino (a native grape of Tuscany) with a dark, luscious appearance and musky notes of forest floor, moist earth and porcini mushroom. The wine is smooth and supple in the mouth and moves forward with grace despite its meaty consistency and slightly sweet aftertaste.

Smells tempting, with cedar, tobacco and abundant sour-cherry aromas. Delicate and a bit light and compact in the mouth, finishing with some mild woody tannins.

Enticing dark-cherry and forest-floor scents show the cedary mark of oak aging. Medium-bodied, with cherry fruit that smoothly glides into tobacco and cedar on the finish. Mild tannins.

Full and round, with plum, berry and herbal aromas. The racy, mouthfilling palate features raspberry, cherry and oak, while the finish delivers coffee and vanilla. A well-made Tuscan red.

Here’s a young Chianti from the Siena hills with a healthy dose of vibrant fruit that helps push the wine forward over the palate. You’ll recognize cherry, blueberry and a slight touch of roasted almond at the back. The wine is fresh, crisp and easy-drinking overall.
