This Calabrian rosé made from the native Gaglioppo grape exhibits fine notes of sweet berry, raspberry and blueberry. Bright in color and density, this is very nice wine from southern Italy that is clean and bright, but not banal.

If you like your wine clean and fruity, steer clear of this individualistic effort, which leads off with barnyard and dirty Band-Aid aromas and folds in tar and hummus notes. There are drying tannins that are and crisp acids, plus solid black cherry and plum flavors to hold everything together, so the overall result is a complex, interesting wine that would pair well with full-flavored meat dishes.

This blend of Gaglioppo, Magliocco and Merlot is light in color and seems older than it really is. The wine is accented by aromas of leather, spice, licorice, root beer and small berry fruit. It has a slightly sweet mouthfeel and bright cherry flavors on the close.

Here’s a Cirò (a traditional wine from Calabria) that boasts a high degree of stylistic interpretation. The wine shows density and concentration with sweet spice notes that blend nicely with the wine’s natural fruit.
