There’s a meaty or slightly burned quality here with ripe notes of black fruit plus exotic spice, smoke and coals. A black mineral element or graphite note is also very prominent and the wine tastes, big, firm, chewy and sophisticated.

A beautifully luminous wine that opens with unbelievable elegance and delicacy. You can just recognize aromas of fuzzy peach and white mushroom associated with the muffo, but they are backed by the complex presence of almond, honey, peach and slight shadings of exotic spice and cinnamon.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Saucy and spicy on the nose, and from that point on it never really gets better. The palate is jacked up with acidic plum and cherry fruit, and the finish is overt, apparently stuck in overdrive.

Italy’s first cru Verdicchio, Le Moie offers loads of citrus-and lime-like nuances on the heels of stone fruit, field flowers and fruit candy. Sweet fruit notes create a lively, tangy impression. A tiny percentage is aged in wood.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a historic producer who has done much work to promote Verdicchio and the Marche region around the world, San Sisto is among the most sophisticated expressions of the variety. Matured in barrel, the deeply golden colored and saturated wine is redolent of vanilla, nut, mature melon and chewy caramel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Marche red shows the aging potential of Conero wines. Notes of raw plum and red currants are enhanced by carefully executed oak-use (12 months in barrique) to render soft layers of exotic spice and leather. Drink this wine with stewed rabbit or red meat.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sweet wines like this complex and intense nectar from central Italy add the final, necessary touch to a complete dining experience. Fifty percent of the grapes are altered by Noble Rot to render primary aromas of fresh stone fruit and white flowers backed by peach cobbler and dried herbs. Cinnamon and lively fruit flavors characterize the mouthfeel. With more than 10 passes in the vineyard during harvest, this is an extremely labor-intensive and precious wine.

Verdicchio grapes from the San Sisto vineyard are left on the vine until they have shriveled up and show signs of botrytis, or noble rot, and are harvested in late December to produce an impressive dessert wine with thick layers of aromas and flavor. The almond paste and honey backed by herbal notes and crisp acidity are simply irresistible.

Fazi Battaglia’s amphora-shaped bottle is a museum worthy legend of Italian design. The contents, on the other hand, express simplicity and ease. This is a no-fuss wine that, over the years, has proudly adorned the checkered tablecloths of neighborhood trattorias all over Italy. Linear and compact, aromas include jasmine, peach blossom and dusty mineral.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is one of the producer’s top wines and its quality is immediately confirmed thanks to well-integrated notes of melon, honey, peach, citrus and exotic fruit. It has vibrant crispness on the close.
