Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, at 71%, and as you might expect, the aromas contain a bit of green and herbal that gives a slightly medicinal edge to the cherry and cedar flavors. It’s medium-bodied, with a slightly creamy texture and some dry, dusty tannins on the finish. Drink it now with a rare steak, or hold it a few years until it smooths out and turns more cedary.

Solid and angular, this Shiraz is all about plum and stone flavors; its disposition is one that would make it more an appropriate partner to charbroiled beef than a party sipper. Berry and plum aromas turn barbecued and ketchupy with air.

Grassy and herbal, this is a slightly pungent rendition of the classic white Bordeaux grapes. It’s simultaneously herbaceous and stony, lacking a bit of flesh in the midpalate, but would serve well to wash down raw oysters.

Savory plum and meat notes are enriched by coffee accents from toasty French oak and lead into a heady, ripe palate with dense boysenberry jam, earth and tar flavors. Shows ample concentration on the lingering finish. Drink now–2012.

This full-bodied, mouthfilling Shiraz isn’t as dense or rich as it could be, but is still a hedonistic wine that avoids going over the top. Subtle smoke, vanilla and spice notes mark the blueberry and blackberry fruit flavors, which linger elegantly on the finish.

Aromas are dark but delicate, and quite nice: clay, ink, charcoal. This is clearly a wine with promise, judging by its texture and tannins, yet this bottling just isn’t singing for me. The midpalate wants more stuffing, and the fruit tastes not quite ripe. Keep your eyes on this wine in coming vintages, though. 8,000 cases produced. Imported by Partner’s Wine Marketing Group.

Grass, hay and peach aromas. Semillon gives it some weight and breadth, and the Sauvignon, a nice mineral and citrus quality. For the price, it wouldn't hurt to keep a bottle or two on hand to serve with a chicken salad, or other light meals.

With its bold aromas of melon, peach and pear, this is a fruit-driven wine of modest appeal. Simple fruit-cocktail flavors add a blast of citrus on the finish.

Ferngrove’s entry-level Shiraz includes 5% Viognier, but it avoids any Viognier-derived stone-fruit character, instead yielding up savory spice scents, a hint of mint and ripe blackberry and plum flavors. Tannins are soft, with acid providing the needed structure. Pepper and clove on the finish bring this bargain to a satisfying close. Drink now.
