Light in color, in fact almost transparent. The nose is full of tomato, brier and dried herbs. In a word: it’s weak. The palate is equally lean and spicy, while the finish seems starched out and on its final legs. On the plus side is a leathery feel and some dried-herb nuances that mingle below the surface.

An easily accessible, easy-drinking style of Crozes-Hermitage, Ferraton’s 2007 La Matinière displays a lovely balance between clean red fruit (cherries, raspberries), baking spices, cracked pepper and a faintly herbal tinge. Drink it now and over the next few years.

Gives off some subtle whiffs of smoke, but it’s light and diffuse on the nose, then bland on the palate. Modest fruit leads into a tart, berry-zinger finish.

Smells meaty, with hints of salami and cedar dominating the modest dried-cherry fruit. Woody on the finish. Hold 2–3 years and hope for better integration.

This medium-bodied, juicy rosé displays welcoming aromas of crushed stone and ripe berries. The flavors run along similar lines, with a watermelon-rind note coming to the fore, only to fade into lingering mineral notes on the finish.

Perfumed aromas carry some light cherry and a hint of charcoal. The smooth palate features a solid base of black cherry and some meaty notes that add character. The finish, while short, is clean and dry. Nice and easy, just what you want from this type of wine. Best Buy. —M.S.

Peppery and green in the nose, with black olive aromas and little ripe fruit. That green quality carries onto the palate, where things are thin and vegetal, with just a hint of sour raspberry to keep it afloat.

Honey and apricot aromas make this wine immediately enticing. This blend of Marsanne and Roussanne is rich, full-bodied with attractive honey flavors. There are creamy layers from the wood fermentation and 10 month aging on lees. It’s fat, food friendly and ready to drink.
