Two tasters picked up pickled asparagus on the nose of this wine, enough to keep it firmly out of the ranks of the high scorers. That said, it still has a pleasant, soft mouthfeel and decent flavors of red berries and spice; one of our reviewers felt it was much better than reflected in the average score.

A blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. It’s juicy and citrusy, with an herbal, almost medicinal quality that makes it more complex. Dry and medium-bodied, offering hints of all kinds of fruits and spices. Unusual and very good.

The winery’s vineyard-designated ’05 Pinots have been so good, it’s a disappointment to find this one so common. The burnt, ashy taste here seems to be from well-toasted oak meant to make up for thin fruit.

This is a delicious wine, more flavorful than most. Explodes in the mouth with peach, kiwi, sweet pear, buttercream, vanilla and spice. It’s rich, yet dry.

This is a bold, oaky Chardonnay. Toasty roasted-nut aromas lead the charge, followed by hints of peach and melon, while a strong vanilla component comes forward on the palate. Finishes warm, with prominent oak spice.

Oakier and leesier than this winery’s regular Chard, this shows powerful citrus and smoky oak aromas and flavors. Rich and complex, with a creamy, buttery mouthfeel. Fruit and herbs keep on coming, leading to a long, complex finish.

Dominated by toasty oak aromas, rich with vanilla and char; also green apple, peach and tropical fruit. Here’s Santa Barbara Chard at its spicy, extracted best. Oaky and citrusy, with high acidity. Bold and flashy.

This single-clone barrel selection takes the essence of the gorgeous, regular ’05 Ashley’s and concentrates it. Brims with sautéed Portobello mushroom, tamari, tangerine zest and black cherry preserves, leading to an immaculately rich, delicately silky, nuanced and enormously complicated Pinot. Hard to exaggerate the purity and finesse. Drink now–2012, before the lush fruit fades.

A blend of lots from Bien Nacido Vineyard and Ashley’s Vineyard, this full-bodied Pinot features cola, mushroom and plum aromas, backed by similar flavors. It’s crisper than the winery’s other Pinot offerings, with an earthier component to its flavors.
