If Springsteen sang about American Zinfandel, this is the wine he’d be drinking. Has those brawny, wild berry flavors, with their edge of pepper and herbs, that define the varietal. Acidity kicks, tannins are well-scrubbed and negotiable. This is rock and roll in the mouth, and downright fun. —S.H.

Sweet and sour Meyer lemon flavors dominate this sleek, crisp wine, which shows nuances of tart green apples and a hint of pineapple-laced crème brûlée. It’s a little simple, but pretty rich, especially for this price.

Clean as a whistle, but on the thin side. Your mouth will easily detect the heat of alcohol, prickly strength of acids and some grassy, citrus flavors, but itÕs watery in the middle, as possibly youÕd expect from an inexpensive wine with 90,000 cases produced.

Round, soft, sweet and supple, this has all the plush berry fruit you’d expect, with a rich overlay of oak. Dry and balanced. This is a super value, and will even benefit from short-term aging.

The Mendocino winemaker, Dennis Patton, who’s a real veteran, made this extraordinary wine. A blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Syrah, it’s one of the best Rhône-style, field blend-type wines of the vintage, showing lush raspberry, cherry, cassis, gingerbread and herb flavors. A tannic taste of bitter almondskin rounds out the finish.

Rather rich for a Ô98, especially at this price, but this winery has control over vast acreage and can afford to pick the very best. Has good blackcurrant aromas with a smoky meatiness, and drinks dry and rich. ItÕs a very supple wine, one that flatters the palate with velvety smoothness.

A little sharp and rustic, but with simple fare it’ll do just fine. Lots of berry-chery flavors, with a rich cocoa edge and smooth tannins, leading to a clean, dry finish.

A more-than-adequate Cab displaying plenty of ripe black-currant, blackberry and oaky aromas and flavors. Drinks dry and fairly tannic, but has a nice grip that would make it ideal with rich, fatty foods like barbecued beef or duck.

Off-dry and very crisp in acidity, this pretty Riesling has waves of Asian spice, pineapple, pear, apple, honey and gardenia flavors. Very few wineries other than Fetzer could produce a wine this balanced at this price.
