Big and bold, with raspberry and black cherry preserves combining with tar and zingy cherry notes on the nose, followed by tar and rose flavors in the mouth. The final act is weak, however, as high alcohol cuts short the zippy finish. Soft tannins make for easy near-term consumption.

Stock up on this beauty, which marries smoke and vanilla notes from toasty oak with blackberry and blueberry fruit. But there’s more to it than berries and oak, as it develops further complexity with air, culminating in a rush of black olive, coffee and a hint of peppery spice. The mouthwatering finish features just the right amount of dusty tannin to pair effectively with any red meats, and suggests that this is one bargain wine that won’t be over the hill in a year or two.
