Big and burly, but also stylish. The nose throws off roasted plum, rubber, road tar and tree bark. All together the bouquet stirs interest. The mouth offers bright acidity in support of drying cherry and raspberry fruit, while the finish is firm, with rising tannins. About as good an Argentinean Cab as you’ll find these days.

A better overall ride than the more oaky Koch Cabernet, this bottling, aged 13 months in barrel, is crisp and fruity, with firm tannins that clamp down on the finish. Along the way there’s bright raspberry and pie cherry flavors that are fresh albeit stark.

Light up front, with slight floral and banana aromas. Flavors of lemon and apple are short and clean, while a tangy finish closes it out. Fairly big for Torrontes but not offering much in the way of character.

An earthy specimen, with leather and crude-oil aromas blended with dark fruit. The palate is extracted and chewy, with berry and cherry flavors that should please. With its body and thickness, it registers as a modern-styled red.

Pretty root beer, prune and cassis aromas start out fast but fade a bit upon airing. The palate is primarily cassis and blackberry, and while the finish is tannic and full, it lacks that final touch of polish you look for in a great red. Nevertheless, it’s a good wine from a label that bears watching. Only 200 cases were made. —M.S.

A wine that’s seriously muscled up with tannin and oak. That’s what you get with this rugged Argentinean Cabernet that comes with leafy notes of tobacco and mint along with raspy, grippy berry fruit. Maybe another year in bottle will help; now it’s not that pleasant.
