Bulky, dark, saturated and leathery on the nose, and then a little salty and edgy in the mouth, with a streak of zingy acidity along with roasted, tangy, thick blackberry flavors. Really good for the price but not as expressive, ripe and flavorful as the 2007 Salia or the higher-end Finca Sandoval; drink now through 2014.

Violet in color, with a richness that’s as visible as it is detectable in the mouth. Smoky, rubbery aromas dance around the boysenberry fruit that defines this warm-weather wine, which has 7% Mourvèdre in the blend. Flavors of berry syrup, chocolate cake and Port are bolstered by ample acids and tannins.

Deep purple in color, with minty, exotic aromas that suggest latex but also richness, vanilla, mocha and spice. The palate is meaty and deep, with smooth-flowing flavors of blackberry, licorice, chocolate and pepper. Young, rich and balanced; hold for two years then drink. 76% Syrah with Monastrell and Bobal.

This Syrah-Garnacha blend is lush and dense, with attractive licorice and blackberry aromas. It’s lusty in the mouth, but balanced as it deals largescale blackberry, pepper, spice and bitter chocolate flavors. Toasty on the finish, with black coffee. A full-bodied winner that’s dynamic and overdelivers for the price.

Local wine critic Victor de la Serna is the man behind this Syrah from central Spain, and you have to admire its bright purple color and sweet plum and black-cherry flavor profile. Leaner in the middle than the downright gooey 2001, which means it’s less jammy and more racy. With 7% Monastrell.

Ripe, sweet-smelling and “muy moderno,” but by no means is this Syrah-led warrior only fruit, bulk and oak. Spanish wine writer Victor de la Serna’s wine gets better all the time. This vintage is like berry cake in a glass, but it’s not short on anything, including acidity and tannic structure. Expect a blast of fruit flavor, intensity in reserve, and some forward oak, vanilla and butter. Should settle into form over the next 18 months.

Earthy, deep and meaty, with rubber and heft to the nose, but also a ton of black fruit. Texturally, it’s like velvet; and the palate is super ripe and lengthy, with flavors of blackberry, mocha, coffee and fine oak. A Syrah-led, full-bodied beauty that’s subtle and not overpowering. Drinkable now but best in about 3-5 years.

Haul out the superlatives for this trend-setter from the easterly Manchuela section of La Mancha. Not the wine-on-steroids that it could be; TNS, made from Touriga Nacional and Syrah, is elegant, sexy and in total control. Floral berry aromas, delicate raspberry flavors and a smooth, lightly oaked finish all help steal the show. Available only in magnums; awesome holiday gift.
