Some patience is required to plow through the early aromas of cherry cough drops, bitter chocolate and smoke, but once you make it past that the wine turns decidedly red and fresh. The palate has tang and a citrusy quality, while flavors of zesty red fruits hint at lemon and pie cherry. A high-toned wine that’s ready to drink now and over the next five years with lamb or beef.

Smells sort of gummy and candied, with aromas of red licorice stick, raisin and raspberry jam. The palate is sizable but comes with racy acidity, thus the flavors veer toward red fruits with an herbal accent. Burns a little on the finish due to sharp acids.

Cantos is a new wine from Finca Valpiedra. It begins with ripe berry, vanilla and chocolate notes but there’s also some cheese and drying oak in there. The palate is zesty, sort of tangy and angular, with raspberry as the key flavor. Shows some acidity and fluttering red fruit on the finish.
