This is a very interesting Syrah and is one to watch in California. The plum, blackberry and rich earth flavors are extremely dry, framed in dusty tannins. It’s not a fat, plush wine, but it is complex and layered, a wine that will support foods without stealing the starring role.

A little austere in the aroma, with earthy, cherry notes. It turns rich, soft and velvety in the mouth, with gentle tannins. There are some pretty cherry-berry flavors, and it’s very dry and clean. Will drink well with a wide variety of foods.

From a newish appellation in El Dorado County, this is a copper-colored wine with richly sweet strawberry flavors and a peppery streak that lasts into the finish. It’s dry enough for the dinner table. Try with cioppino. —S.H.
