Foley, one of Santa Rita Hills’ leading wineries, is having fun with Pinot, releasing various bottlings that reflect terroir and clones. Their 667 bottling is a terrific wine. It shows the cleanness and purity of this Dijon clone, with the appellation’s ability to ripen fruit to cherried richness while maintaining dryness.

Toasty oak, creamy lees and citrusy acidity are the stars of this bracing wine, although there is a deep current of papaya underneath. It is very dry, and the taste of earth and mushroomy herbs shows up on the finish. On the lean side, but not without interest.

Opens with aromas of cherries, cranberries, beets, sautéed mushrooms, dried herbs and raw meat, along with the smoke and vanilla of oak barrels. The palate impression is tart, with underlying black cherry flavors and a silky mouthfeel. Drink now.

Here’s a wine that went wrong somewhere. It’s dark, dry and full-bodied, but is unexpectedly earthy and green in the mouth, and while it has smooth tannins, it’s not going anywhere.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Earthier than Foley’s Clone 2A Pinot, with rich mushroom and soy notes underneath the coffee and sweet red cherry flavors, this is a dry wine, with good acidity to balance out all that fruit. It’s a little raw and juicy now, a young wine that needs some bottle time to pull itself together. Best 2007 through 2010.

It must be the clone that lends a slightly heavy, earthy weight and flavor to this Chard, which is softer and more rustic than Foley’s other ’05s. The pineapple, lemon, guava and nectarine have a stewed or baked pie-filling quality. Quite good, but not really my favorite of the lineup.

Shows the candied exoticness this bottling always displays, with tangerine, raspberry, marzipan, chutney, red cherry, mocha and pepper flavors. Off by a touch from the fabulous 2005, but still a fascinating, different sort of Pinot Noir.

As the name implies, this is Foley’s unoaked Chardonnay. It’s amazing how much the grapes pack in without any help from barrels. Pineapple jam, peach pie, lemons and limes, figs, vanilla and clove spice, it all rushes together into a swirl of acid-brightened flavor.

Superrich, made in the modern style of exceptionally ripe fruit and lots of oak. Floods the mouth with pineapple, pear, green apple butter, buttered toast and crême brûlée flavors, accented with brisk acidity.

A very rich, layered Pinot that stands out for its depth and ageability. Fully dry and supported with crisp acidity, the wine has cherry, currant and cola flavors that finish a little primary and direct right now. Give it a year or so to attain greater polish, and should really hit its stride by 2010.
