The huge, 240-acre estate of Fontanafredda has suddenly won a new lease on life after lying almost dormant for several years. This is the second vintage produced under new management, and the style is open and accessible, but still powerful. There is pure ripe fruit on the nose, flavors of black figs and wild strawberries and dry tannins, which still do not dominate the fruit.

There is power in this wine, with its tarry black-fruit aromas. Rich and dark, with solid, dry tannins, there are still generous fruit flavors that will make it accessible over the next five years.

The standard blend of Barolo, with a production of 100,000 bottles, is very much up to the new standards of Fontanafredda. Aromas of wood and ripe fruit on the nose, with firm, dry tannins over the ripe fruit, give some sense of hidden power.

Filled with luscious red fruits and vanilla, this is a supple, medium-weight wine destined for early consumption. Strawberry and cherry flavors don't develop a lot of complexity, but this easy to drink wine is nevertheless satisfying.

The perfect wedding-cake bubbly has aromas of fresh Muscat grapes, dried grass and flowers, chalkboard and lingering fruit. Those qualities make it pleasantly refreshing in the mouth, where it boasts a nice balanced between sweetness and crispness.

Vigna La Rosa is always among Fontanafredda’s best performing wines and this vintage will appeal to those who enjoy a riper, fuller style of Barolo. There are mature aromas of blackberry and raspberry backed by meaty tones of mesquite, smoke, cola, charcoal and powdery mocha. There’s density and roundness here with velvety, plush tannins.

Fontanafredda is a landmark estate for the entire winemaking area and this vintage of its lovely base Barolo is particularly delicious. The aromas are broad and intense and combine hickory notes with coffee, black fruit and spice. It’s a modern, succulent wine executed in a bold and food- friendly style. Drink after 2015.

This is a soft and succulent Barbera d’Alba with soft oak notes followed by bright fruit, black cherry and red currants. There’s crisp, acidic fruit here followed by the softness and finesse supplied by the supple oak element.

Fontanafredda’s Moscato d’Asti is a cut above its competitors, with intense orange, grape and pear aromas that lead into a palate of white grapes and ground cherries. The medium finish is intensely sweet but an underlying freshness saves it from being cloying. Drink with a plate of mixed fruit.
