Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dense, dark color, scented with meaty fruit, smoke, toast and tar, this is quintessential Washington Syrah. It simply delivers, in spades, everything you want: sweet berries, spicy, toasty oak, and highlights of cinnamon and pepper.

A thoughtful blend from vineyards representing the Wahluke Slope, Yakima Valley and Columbia Gorge AVAs. Complex and nuanced, this weaves together peaches, apples, honeydew melon, pepper, cinnamon and a vein of clean, wet rock. Great structure suggests this could be cellared for another five or six years.

This is a plump, mouthfilling Syrah that just lacks any extra dimension of depth or richness. The blackberry and charred toast flavors are pleasant, finishing crisp and clean.

Dark and juicy, with powerful, polished blackberry and black cherry fruit. Spice and hints of black pepper help frame the wine, which is structured, confident and tannic. Exceptional winemaking shows throughout.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There is nothing wimpy about this delicious Zin from a rising star winery in Walla Walla. Dried fruit, brown sugar and tart cherries fill the mouth with rich flavors. They’re underscored by bourbon barrel highlights from aging in American oak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A new offering from Forgeron, this fresh and juicy Fand light tropical fruits. Still yeasty and showing some recent bottling aromas, it is a fine example of pure Washington Marsanne and a wine that should improve over the next few years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This could be labeled Chardonnay, as that grape is most of the blend, which also includes a bit of Roussanne and Muscat. Kept in Burgundian oak (40% new), this is a fresh, snappy wine with crisp green apple and pineapple fruit flavor lightly kissed with butterscotch from the barrel aging.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Always a favorite from this Walla Walla producer, the 2005 Merlot includes about 6% Cabernet Franc. Firm and muscular, with a dense core of blackberry, black cherry and cassis, it sprinkles in ground coffee and a streak of licorice. The style is deep, dark, laced with graphite, and definitely built for long -term cellaring.

Winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla adds just 5% Malbec to the blend, “to fill in the middle fruit,” she explains. Just released prior to this tasting, it was still quite tight, with a hard shell around the black fruits. Dried herbs and sweet grain highlights add complexity, and the mix of vineyards (Pepper Bridge, Klipsun, and Alder Ridge) brings the best characteristics of three different AVAs into play.
