An intriguing wine, with very good fruit purity, lots of apple, pear, and earth flavors, even a touch of crème brulée. Medium to full in the mouth, with an earthy, nutty finish.

Viscous in the mouth; the palate yields yellow stone fruit that’s offset by nougat and mineral flavors. An interesting, refreshing wine with some weight, without flashy toast. One to sneak past Chard lovers.

Bold and generous, with a gorgeous purple-garnet color and spicy cracked pepper notes. The palate has an odd metallic character but there’s loads of spice and caramel character popping through the sweet, ripe boysenberry fruit on the finish. A serious effort.

A classy, well-made wine, with pastry crust and red pencil-eraser aromas and a chalky, dusty mouthfeel. On the palate, there’s ripe, juicy plum fruit and chewy tannins, all of which persists through the finish. That I don’t mention auxiliary flavor nuances doesn’t mean that the wine has nothing else going on—it just means that the fruit and the texture, really, is what you most notice.

This wine is 70% Shiraz, with Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon filling out the rest of the blend. The JSM isn’t quite as good this vintage as it has been in the past, owing largely to its stewy fruit flavors. But it does have its high points. The wine’s smooth tannins and sturdy frame are admirable, as are its clay, sand and mocha accents.

Fox Creek made no 2003 Reserve Shiraz, so this Short Row is the year's top wine. It's plummy and elegant on the palate, wikth some red pencil eraser and bread flour accents, and a seeped-tea bite on the finish. Aromas—wheat flour, red fruit, licorice—are pretty, too.

This is tasty if not complicated, with purple-red fruit and a hearty helping of oak. Smooth on the palate; drink now.

Meaty, burnt sugary aromas are deep. On the palate, tannins are chewy and red fruit is dressed up with coffee and mocha; coffee continues through the long finish. Bears some resemblance to the 1994 Reserve Shiraz, which is still going strong. Drink through 2012.

A 70% Cab–30% Merlot blend with very dark flavors—earth, oak, black plum. In spite of the flavors, it’s a manageable, approchable size. Finishes quite lovely, with amaretto, cassis and ink, and dry tannins. I only wish it would show a little more on the nose, which is pretty hard to read.
