Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A richly fruity wine that offers up plush blackberry, cherry, bitter chocolate and herb flavors that are dry and crisp, plus a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. The tannins are kind of tough, though.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Huge Pinot, dark and extracted, with enormously ripe flavors of baked cherry pie, blackberry jam, cola and chocolate. As delicious as this may sound, the wine suffers from being too soft. Finishes with white sugary sweetness.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Soft and elegant, with cherry pie, cola and mocha flavors, this single-vineyard Pinot is a little one-dimensional but offers lots to like. It has a silky, satiny texture. Drink now.

This bottling by veteran Foxen offers one of the starkest, most appealing choices available in California Chardonnay. Far from a superripe buttery monster, it’s a lean, elegant machine. With vibrant acidity and a mineral undergirding, it offers rich flavors of citrus fruits and rind and yeasty, Champagne-like lees.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tasted in May, this Grenache-based Rhône blend was still overwhelmingly vibrant and fresh in grapey, primary fruit raspberry, cherry and blackberry flavors. It’s appealing, but really needs some time to settle down and mellow, so the fruit and oak can mesh together. By the summer of 2009, it should be a wonderful wine, retaining its balanced lushness through at least 2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s a big, bold, ripe and rich Chardonnay full of oaky-leesy notes. Huge fruit, oaky and intensely spicy, yet with the refreshing acidity to remain balanced. A kick-ass, full-blown Chard.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bright and acidic as Pinots from this vineyard always are, with crushed hard-spice aromas and ripe cola and cherry compote flavors. The wine is fairly full-bodied and dry, with a polished silk and velvet mouthfeel. Fine now, but has the stuffing to improve for a few years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Gives a real jolt of tropical fruit, even banana, in the nose. Drinks ripe and rich, with big Santa Barbara fruit. Yet it seems a little disjointed, as if the parts weren’t coming together. Might be better in a year.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full and elegant. Bouquet of apple and pear fruit, with pine-needle, tropical fruit and an almost Alsatian touch of petrol. Butterscotch, cinnamon/clove, and herb notes grace the core of pear-flavored fruit. From the start to the strong finish, it’s an interesting, and successful, blend of sweet and sour elements.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Winemaker Bill Wathan helped found this vineyard, and he understands it as well as anyone. The wine’s alcohol is high, giving it a fat, glyceriney mouthfeel as well as a bit of heat. But there’s no denying the opulence of the blackberry, cherry and currant flavors, and the finish is thoroughly dry. Drink this powerful wine with game, broiled steak or grilled lamb.
