With the hand-painted word “Magma” across the front of the bottle, there’s no mistaking this wine as a child of Sicily’s menacing Mt. Etna. The wine (this is the 6th edition made) showcases bright fruit flavors with raisiny overtones of plum and prune. It ends on a dusty mineral note.

The 4th edition of MunJebel (a blend of Nerello Mascalese from both the 2006 and 2007 vintages) is one of Cornelissen’s nicest wines. There’s bright fruit here and an attractive purity that speaks highly of the dramatic volcanic conditions that have shaped it. It’s a special wine with a light color and delicate aspect.

This is a curious wine for collectors and Etna enthusiasts. You can taste the volcano in its purity here. Frank Cornelissen is a renegade winemaker who uses no stabilizers or preservatives (like sulfur) and does not filter either. The wines are fermented in clay amphorae and exhibit tones of dried fruit, plums and volcanic ash.

Made from fruit from vintages 2007 and 2008, MunJebel 5 (pure Nerello Mascalese) exhibits a light ruby color and pristine fruit notes of small berry and dusty mineral. This wine exemplifies a winemaking philosophy in which as little as possible is done to alter the pure state of the grape.

MunJebel 4 (with fruit from the 2007 vintage) is a blend of Grecanico Dorato, Carricante and Cattaratto that opens with a dark amber color and segues to aromas of caramel and butterscotch. The wine is dry and thick in the mouth and the appearance is cloudy and concentrated (the wine is not filtered).

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This maverick blend of Grecanico Dorato, Coda di Volpe, Carricante and Cataratto opens with a deep amber color and slightly oxidized aromas of butterscotch, pineapple and dried apricot. The wine is dry and thick on the palate and definitely represents an interesting twist on Etna winemaking.

As its name implies, Rosso del Contadino is inspired by the easy-drinking wines that sustained farmers and peasants in a bygone era. Frank Cornelissen’s interpretation offers a sophisticated twist with delicate mineral nuances between the fruit. As an unfiltered and un-stabilized wine, however, you can expect a cloudy appearance and some raw notes on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The 6th edition of Rosso del Contadino (Cornelissen counts in editions rather than vintages) offers a light ruby color, with some murky clouding and bright fruit aromas of red berry, currants and cassis. There’s a touch of dill weed or mountain herb on the close. This is a delicate wine that might not travel well.

Frank Cornelissen doesn’t like Malvasia, nor does he like Inzolia. Therefore he added 20% Nerello Mascalese and decided to make a rosé instead. Copper-colored Susucaru offers aromas of butterscotch and ripe melon over resin and maple syrup. In the mouth, you’ll feel slight tannic firmness. Only 900 bottles are made.
