Rather herbal and peppery on the nose, instantly marking it as Grüner. Honey and green apple flavors merge easily on the weighty, slightly oily palate, finishing long and peppery. Imported by Vin Divino.

A beautifully elegant, focused wine, full of racy, steely fruit, managing to combine fullness with lightness and an intensely dry aftertaste. Hirtzberger’s 29-acre vineyard is in the western Wachau village of Spitz, where the Rieslings are aged in large acacia wood barrels.

I wanted to like this wine more than I did. It starts off with lovely aromas of tangerines, apples and pineapples, as well as a delicate floral note. The mouthfeel is full, the stage is set. But the flavors seem a bit simple and fruity and the finish lacks the length expected of a wine of this pedigree. It’s very good, but not the legend it should be. Imported by Vin Divino.

The steeply terraced vineyard that produces Pluris has a single row of vines on each terrace to get maximum exposure. The resulting wine is intensely peppery, with flavors of white figs and spice and a long, soft aftertaste.

Tight, taut and mineral, tense and concentrated. There is intense acidity and a touch of spice, but this is all about structure and suppressed fruit. Keep this wine at least until 2010.

Intense, creamy aromas set the scene for an impressively rich wine that brings out plenty of stops. While the fruit is fresh, it is also dense, concentrated, a welter of white and yellow fruit flavors over acidity. There is a pure sense of terroir wine, the fruit a real expression of the land.

A piercingly fresh wine, lifted by delicious green apple and citrus flavors. The wine is lively, light, but given backbone by a crisp, cool minerality, a steely core.

Franz Hirtzberger tells us about harvest dates on his back labels: the fruit for this wine was harvested up to November 21, the result of the cool year. But the late harvest has brought out a wonderful richness of fruit flavors, the wine packed with spice, yellow fruits, livened up by sweet acidity. For aging—give it four years at least.

Classic, cellar-worthy Riesling, combining a ripe, creamy mouthfeel with great length and precision on the finish. Citrus and apple scents start it off, joined by riper pear flavors and hints of orange and bergamot. Long on the finish, picking up layers of peppery, minerally spice. Drink 2014-2020, or beyond.
