Barolo Gramolere offers an attractive window onto the Nebbiolo grape with peek views at its inherent complexity and elegance. The wine opens with a ruby-garnet color and offers aromas of wild berry, white cherry, tar, licorice, hazelnut and ginger.

This is an elegant and austere Barolo with distinctive notes of ground coffee, chocolate and dried apricot. It takes some time to open up, and once it does, it proudly displays harmony and intensity. The tannins are stone hard and will undoubtedly soften with time. Drink after 2018.

San Lorenzo is an excellent vineyard and this estate is producing exciting results that are worth watching in the future. The wine finds balance and harmony thanks to its smooth aromas of black fruit, Spanish cedar, pine and tobacco. There are no sharp points here and the wine is vibrant and polished in the mouth. Drink after 2012.

Monvigliero is a round, modern wine with sweet aromas of lavender flower, ginger, allspice, bee’s wax, redwood and cherry cola. It’s sophisticated and builds in intensity the longer it’s kept it in the glass. A dusty mineral note appears in the mouth and makes for a drying close. Drink with hearty stews.

Gramolere (a vineyard in Monforte d’Alba with excellent orientation and soils) offers wide sweeping aromas of spice, cherry, red apple and white mushroom. There is some mature fruit here in the form of strawberry and raspberry and the wine offers a broader, wider nose than most. It carries weight and breadth in the mouth and will be ready to drink in a few years.

Barolo San Lorenzo has very nice intensity—it’s there, but not in your face. The wine is already starting to show some interesting mineral components that are backed by black fruit, licorice and truffle. Its intensity builds in the glass and although it starts slow, it picks up loads of speed in the mouth. Drink after 2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Nicely extracted and thick in the mouth with plush layers of black fruit, mineral, ash, leather and vanilla, Monvigliero shows a balanced and elegant side to the 2005 vintage. The wine is inky and rich with stone-tight tannins and a drying finish. Pair it with roasted lamb or pork stuffed with prunes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fratelli Alessandria’s flagship Barolo opens with pretty spice nuances followed by cherry, blueberry and loads of buoyant fruit. This is a happy, cheerful wine with a vertical lift and tonic notes of eucalyptus and root beer. The tannins are drying and fine. Drink after 2018.

Barolo Monvigliero is a standout wine that fully encompasses the greater philosophy of the 2007 vintage. This opulent and seriously delicious wine opens with dark, brooding concentration and sweet oak and berry fruit aromas followed by vanilla, leather and tobacco. Pulpy fruit flavors help move the wine smoothly over the palate. Drink in 5–10 years to let the tannic structure subside.

Saffron spice, leather, tobacco, mesquite and sweet cherry provide the foundation for a very compelling aromatic bouquet. The wine delivers tight tannins and a chewy finish that needs another 5–10 years of cellar aging.
