Muscular aromas of plum cake, sawdust and smoked meat make for an attractive and complex nose. The flavors are mostly plum and blackberry, indicating a fully ripe California-style wine. Powerful verve and drive ensure that it races through the finish.

Made in an immediately appealing, oaky way, this Chard has appealing peach, pear, green apple and honey flavors that taste like they were baked into a pie. Easy to find, with more than a million bottles in circulation.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rich in well-ripened fruit flavors and with a sweet coat of smoky oak and vanilla, this Chard also has a structural integrity based on crispness and vitality. It’s not a soft, creamy Chard, but a firm one, with exotic fruit.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Somebody picked early, to judge from the slightly green, peppercorn notes. But in a way that adds to the complexity, and makes the wine different. It’s not a fruit bomb, it’s a coffee, herb and blackberry-flavored dry Merlot with structural integrity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is made in the style of an Aussie Shiraz, a big, powerful wine that stuffs the mouth with fresh, jammy fruit and spice flavors. It’s very dry and crisply balanced with acidity, and brings to mind smoky, barbecued meats and poultry.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine pours as black as a young Port, and has a rich, thick texture. Aromas include raisins, chocolate and wood, and it feels dense. Not delicate or for the faint-hearted. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A solid Chardonnay that will satisfy fans of the variety. It’s a sleekly tart, streamlined wine, with vanilla oak and buttered toast influences acting on the pineapples and green apples. Finishes a little sweet, but crisp.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tough, hard and dry, with thick tannins and a cut of acidity that obscure deep flavors of blackberries, black licorice and black pepper. This chewy wine could develop over the next 2–3 years, but right now, it’s pretty unrelieved.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells a bit briary and minty, but once you take a sip, it delivers plenty of ripe, sophisticated cherry-berry fruit. The tannins are smooth and polished. There’s lots to like in this dry, full-bodied dinner wine at a giveaway price.
