Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very distinctive Chard—full of character and even eccentricity. There are strong, up-front aromas of tangerines, vanilla, butterscotch, smoke, ripe peaches and caramel. It’s especially notable for the thick, creamy texture and a penetrating, spicy clove note that follows through on the long, rich finish. A complex, serious wine.

There is toasty oak on the opening but it is well integrated with ripe apple and tropical-fruit flavors, sprinkled with an intriguing squeeze of lime and a grassy slightly underripe melon edge. The finish is long, with a lemony allspice character and good complexity of flavor.

Strong , complex aromas, with notes of tropical fruit and coconut. In the mouth, it’s oaky and spicy, with penetrating, bright, effusive flavors that you might go so far as to call racy. The alcohol content is high and it drinks a little soft, but this is a very seductive wine. A crowd-pleaser, for sure.

Fritz has a good track record with Dry Creek Valley Zin, one of the variety’s best natural homes in California. This is their most expensive bottling in years, and it’s quite good. Rich and savory, with fine, ripe tannins, it shows flavors of raspberries, cherries, cassis, licorice and Asian spices, with a meaty, leathery edge. Best now and for the next several years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A rich, creamy wine, loaded with personality. Spicy, oaky aromas ride over tropical fruit and peach scents, and it drinks crisp and spicy, although the midpalate is a little thin in fruit. The oaky sweetness is very nice, and so is the whistle-clean finish.

Good for Fritz for holding this Cab back for a few years to let it mellow. It’s still a pretty tannic, primary fruit-laden Cabernet, with briary blackberry, cherry, raspberry and red currant flavors. But judging by the firm tannins, it has an interesting future. Fine now, and should provide good drinking through 2012, at least.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Showing the rustic tannins and peppery spices that Dry Creek Cabs usually possess, this Cab wants a little time in the cellar. With black currant, chocolate, tobacco and herb flavors, it’s very close in quality to the winery’s regular ’05 Cab, with a little more concentration and a firmer tannin structure.

Skirts the line of overripeness, with just a suggestion of raisins and heaviness, but wisely stays on the side of balance. Ultrafresh, jammy flavors of cherries and blackberries are encased in rich, complex tannins, and the wine is mercifully dry.

One of the palest rosés of the year in color, this blush isn’t shy in flavor. It offers a sunburst of lemon chiffon pie, strawberry, raspberry and chutney flavors, and finishes thoroughly dry and crisp. This is a really excellent wine.

This is a soft, creamy Chardonnay that’s reminiscent of baked apples loaded with cinnamon and perked up with a few curls of orange zest. Finishes long, with creamy vanilla supported by orange echoes. —J.C.
